This location was originally built in 1850, and is listed in the Historical Homes of Carbondale.

In 1950, after graduating from St. Louis University, School of Mortuary Science, James W. Walker came to Southern Illinois. He started his own funeral home business on Walnut Street before purchasing the current building located at 112 S. Poplar with two additional locations in Hurst and Alto Pass. The Carbondale location was purchased from Abe Martin in 1954 and has been operating as a funeral home since.

Through the years, several remodeling projects have resulted in the completion of a new chapel, selection room, and additional parking.

The new addition of Walker Cremation Service at the Carbondale location was recently completed.
